Looking Ahead to 2009

Postby ERawkStar on Wed Dec 03, 2008 7:10 pm

Let's get more activity up in this bitch.

So, since we are at the close of 2008, what albums are you looking forward to in 2009? Or hoping become a reality?

Off the top of my head, no order:

Neko Case
Andrew Bird
maybe some Mission of Burma?
STNNNG
maybe LCD Soundsystem?
The Conformists

Probably a few others taht I'm drawing a blank on...

I will probably also do my damndest to get Jesus Lizard tickets for next year's show.

I will also be at that Jesus Lizard show, I hope. One of my bands is actually playing a show with STNNNG this month in Elgin. Should be a blast. I dig their labelmates Vampire Hands a lot too... That Neko Case album looks ridiculous, but I am really excited about it. A couple years ago 3-4 days a week I would ride my bike for 40 miles down the IL bike path and Blacklisted almost always made it into rotation, along with Songs: Ohia's Magnolia Electric Co.

Speaking of Magnolia Electric Co., they have an album coming out this year too! There was an after party house show thing in Elgin over the summer(?) and The Coke Dares were playing. And the singer looked insanely familiar; it was Jason Groth from Magnolia Electric Company. That was one of the first moments I have ever felt starstruck... here I was at this random house in Elgin and the guitar player from one of my favorite bands of all time was hanging out. Needless to say he was extremely nice and friendly. Very cool dude.

Other than that I haven't really been keeping up on upcoming releases, but it was just announced that Milemarker is playing a show at the Empty Bottle, which I am really excited about and I just bought tickets to see Les Savy Fav on January 31st in Chicago.

I'll be at the Bottom Lounge STNNNG show. I don't do suburbs unless I have to (like, visiting boyfriend's family). Vampire Hands I keep meaning to check out.

Speaking of other Minneapolis bands, Self-Evident might come out with something new in 2009. The are pretty consistent with the album every two years frequency. I also have to check what some other Minneapolis bands that I like are up to.

Magnolia Electric Company is a band I keep dropping the ball on, as far as seeing live and listening to them goes. I was going to go to that Abbey show but work kinda kept me from going.

yeah I'm excitied over The Decemberists new album coming out this year. I've started to listen to Picaresque and I'm really loving this band at the moment.
Also Ben Kweller and WILCO's new album I'm looking forward to as well.
Other than that I don't have much of a list thus far but hopefully I'll discover more as the year progresses.

Hurray!
So, Picaresque is your first album? It gets so much better from there on... :D

And, I must warn you, I don't think they're new album will be much like Picaresque.
If you do go on to further listening of the band (I strongly suggest every single album they've made to-date) then you'll find that almost each one's style is a little different.
Of course, the lyric writing is mostly the same, and Colin Meloy's distinctive wail is present in every song, but there are differences.

If you really like them, and want somewhere to go next, You really should try "Castaway's and Cutouts"
also, "The Crane Wife" because that's their most recent one, and possibly the best indication of what to expect in their forthcoming album.

cheers.

also, if Wilco is releasing a new album, maybe this is finally the year I take the step forward and get into them!? :o

Haha, considering I check these boards multiple times a day, I really should start posting more.

And I feel really out of place on that list. It's like, "incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible, some guy rubbing two sticks together."

I'm looking forward to most likely seeing Andrew Bird / Loney, Dear (two birds with one stone!) in early February, and if The Rural Alberta Advantage makes it down to Austin for SXSW, I'll probably freak out or something out of excitement.

Thanks for the advice :D
yes Picaresue is the first album from the Decemberists and so far the only one from the band thus far.
I'll follow your advice and buy the two albums you mentioned as the next step and hopefully I'll like these albums as well (I'm sure I will!)

You never know with Wilco, this might just be the year!

@Jim - LOL! I'll go check out your music later today to see if I agree with your "guy rubbing two sticks together" assessment of your music :)
