It's OK, we're in the 21st Century, SG.
I tend to piss off fans of the following: Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, the Decemberists, Of Montreal.

Not that I am apologetic or anything...

A song has never made me cry on its own, but ones that make me come close:

OR - Seas too Far to Reach
Shearwater - Wedding Bells are Breaking...
Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr.
Damien Jurado - Medication, Tonight I Will Retire
Joshua Radin - Star Mile (definitely a "cry after a breakup" song)
The Mountain Goats - Moon over Goldsboro
Neutral Milk Hotel - Two Headed Boy Pt. 2 (pretty much a common consensus on that one)
Pedro the Lion - Letter From a Concerned Follower

That's all that comes to mind for now...

Oh but it is. I don't know what your interpretation of the song is, but to me it seems to be about a guy trying to reach out to his girlfriend, whose dad is dying. It doesn't seem to work; he isn't really able to get through to her, but regardless he tries again and again. And failing still, again.

Speaking of which, here's a nifty cover of that song, by some dude on Youtube.
Bring it on, Vietnam!!

Glad I didn't write this post! Wouldn't want to be accused of trolling...

Oops, better name a song quick...Whispering Pines - The Band.

I just love double standards.

I sense some resentment. Let live, man. No one likes to admit when they are in the wrong.

When I saw them at Stubbs a few years ago Will said it was about dreaming about sleeping with women who aren't your girlfriend or something to that effect...

The same guy does a cover of Song of Our So-Called Friend:

Sincere. And obviously a fan. Are you on here, Mr. Shoutsoutloud?

i'm a fan of that guy's interpretation of "Seas Too Far To Reach" ... I've watched it a few times and i think he's got the spirit, if not the exact vocal stylings. it's spirit that counts.

i've been wanting to post in this thread for weeks now but i'm only now tipsy enough to actually do it...lots of songs make me cry, but especially:

"Pitseleh" by Elliott Smith (or any E.S., really)
"The World in 1984" by Shearwater
"Not Nice" by Chris Garneau
anything from Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes and most of From the Choirgirl Hotel, too (yeah, i'm one of those girls)
"Superpowers" by The Dismemberment Plan
"Dinner at Eight" by Rufus Wainwright
"Near A Garden" by Shearwater
nearly anything from The Eels Daisies of the Galaxy album
"I'm Still Your Fag" by Broken Social Scene
"How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan
"Fling" by Built to Spill
"Story of an Artist" by Daniel Johnston
"Ghost" by Indigo Girls

man, i'm-a stop there.

It isn't necessarily that it's sad -- it just stirs up a lot of emotion to me. The whole album does, for that matter, but this seems like the culmination of it. I guess "refreshing" or "cathartic" would be a better way to say it--the images of "giving back all of our tears so we can cry them again".

"A Better Son/Daughter" by Rilo Kiley is the only song I can remember ever making me cry.

Ballad of Lou The Welterweight - The Felice Brothers

It starts off all funny-like, then just kind of spirals downward. The last chorus (which was the really funny part at the beginning) is the most gut-wrenching line ever.

For me....

Postby nate1979 on Wed Dec 12, 2007 5:15 pm

For me nothing comes close to :

Nothin' by Townes Van Zandt - gets me everytime, best songwriter by my estimates

Others include:

That's How You Sing Amazing Grace - Low
In the Drugs - Low
Both on the album Trust - way too good

Sam Stone - John Prine

Ohio - Damien Jurado
