Sections of the Board.

Anything not related to Okkervil river should go here.

Sections of the Board.

Maybe it's just me, but I NEVER think to check out the Off-Topic section here. In fact, I'm bookmarked to go directly to the Okkervil River section (as a relic of times past, surely.)

Anyway, maybe it would be useful/better/exciting to do a little revamping of the board and split posts into further sections? That way 'Off-Topic' might not seem so The OTHER Brother-ish.

Like:
+ Band/Records/Shows/Setlists section?
+ Links/Media/Press Releases section?
+ Introduction section?

I don't know. Just a thought.

it's a pretty good idea because I'm the same, I tend to forget about the "Off Topic" section and rarely, if at all, visit it.
Also creating more categories would make it a bit more organised and useful.

yeah, i sort of agree. right now it seems like we have two sub-forums - "Giant Okkervil River Trash Heap of Everything Even Slightly Related to the Band" and then "Obama/misc". the former gets a bit difficult to sift through because its just ALL of everything.

it would be quite nice to have sub-forums to clean it up a bit.

The problem with that would be the time involved to move all those non-topic threads into here or into other sub forums. I don't think SG really had time to do that and probably didn't want to. Can't say I blame him.

Maybe there could just be an archive thread? And just the currently active ones could be moved?

The problem I've found with forums that I've run in the past is that if there isn't very much activity, restructuring the forum makes it seem kind of dead and people get disheartened and stop posting.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying, but I'm not sure that making the forum more organized will make it seem more dead than it actually is.

I think having an Okkervil River section and an Everything Else section is good enough. I do believe, however, that because the website links directly to the OR section, most people aren't aware of the EE section... there must be someone who can fix that...

yeah that is a good point. If people can become more aware of the EE section then it could become used more, so the board doesn't necessarily have to be reorganised completely.

I agree that, with the amount of traffic the board currently gets, the existing two sections of the board are enough. Thanks for the explanation of why people ignore the off-topic portion of the board; I never come through okkervilriver.com so didn't know about that. Problem is that I think it's a given that neither Okkervil nor their people will change the link on the website. If Gary isn't too fed up with the lackadaisical attitude, maybe he could throw a sticky at the top of the Okkervil section linking to the off-topic section.
there's no such thing as rock stars they're just people who play music, and some of them are just like us and some of them are dicks
