A new album by Franz Ferdinand, that's pretty exciting! I've seen them perform live just a few weeks ago and they were awesome :D

I wouldn't have expected Shearwater to start recording so soon, it hasn't even been that long since their last album!
I like the songs I've heard from Shearwater so far and I want to get some of their stuff but I just haven't got around to purchasing their albums yet.
I should probably get off my butt and buy one of their albums soon.

Well, I really like the Decemberists and am (again) kicking myself for not seeing the OR/Decemberists tour when they played in Austin some time back.

Back in December, amazingly Decemberists opened their tour in Georgetown, Texas at the very tiny university there (drawing blank on the precise name).

I've seen rumours of White Stripes appearing at Cochella so maybe they will release something new and Meg will get take her meds.

I have resolved to see more unknown, untapped/undiscovered talent this year. I'm looking forward to SXSW and hope OR will win another Austin Chron award and hope they will be at the awards show and not in Austrialia or New Zealand.

Oh yeah, really can't wait for Jim's release, what's the band's name again, Rubbing Two Sticks...I like! :D

haha! Rubbing Two Sticks Together!
that would be an awesome name for a band!
He does a tiny bit of self-promotion, and I get excited as if it were my own band haha.

Thank you for the link...I didn't know such a site existed...Jim, if you read this, you have an open invitation to crash at my house anytime you (and a guest) make a sojourn to Austin. You recall, of course, that you had my back at OR's Emo's show, so I kinda owe you one. Bring your guitar!

I obviously love this board, too...So much fun making new friends with like interests...or rather obsessions and discovering new music, etc., in the bargain.

Hahaha, if i ever start a music collaboration with someone, we'll definitely have to call it Rubbing Two Sticks Together.

Of course I recall! I also seem to recall us both being at the same Mountain Goats show and not running into eachother, haha -- that place was packed that night. At the very least, we need to meet up before / at a show sometime!

lmao

I have to say, I'm listening to Apostle of Hustle, and it is just mind blowing.
they are the side project of the guy from Broken Social Scene (which i'm not familiar with yet)

Their last album, 'National Anthem of Nowhere' was released in '07, maybe they're due for another this year?

I suggest giving them a listen, they're superb!

I've been discovering loads of new bands and music lately by subscribing to every "song of the day/week/whatever" I encounter. I especially like NPR's and KUT's. I discovered the Low Anthem this way, and like them a lot...I saw that someone here was going to see them...I'm jealous!

I'm going to see Lucinda Williams and Joan Baez the same week next month...I know there has been some hostility towards Lucinda here, but I have a soft spot for her, music stand and all. She could stand on her head to perform and I would still love her. I've never seen Joan Baez and thought I should just because...

Jim, yes Antone's was packed that night, great show, though...PM me next time you come to Austin if you like.

Apostle of Hustle, Maps & Atlases, Frontier Ruckus, Radiohead, Conor Oberst, The Shins, Mock Orange!

ahh so much music!

well, that's what I listened to today.

I like using last.fm and thesixtyone to get music recommendations. But most often I just use other people's suggestions who share my taste. (one reason I frequent this board so much)

And for a while, KEXP's song of the day podcast was a gold mine.
I found:
Okkervil River! --> Shearwater
Apostle of Hustle
The Shins
The Annuals
Iron & Wine
Andrew Bird
Wild Sweet Orange

it was pretty good for while.

THE LOW ANTHEM!!!

I am so excited someone else has finally heard of them! Aren't they great? I am listening to them right now.

I try and check out as many new-to-me bands as I can but it gets so overwhelming. I practically get the shakes reading the posts of people here. My to-read pile of books threatens to topple over and crush me and somehow that is less anxiety-making than coming on the interwebs and, by the time I've read this board and a couple of music blogs and listened to the NPR song of the day, having all these band names spinning in my head.

Oh, and I guess I should say what I'm looking forward to:

Andrew Bird
Rhett Miller (sounds like this one will be less power poppy, which bodes well)
Band of Horses
Somehow I can't believe OR will go a whole year with nothing, not even a single or EP, so let's put them on there too, she said optimistically
Last year one of the best concerts I went to was the new Josh Joplin/Garrison Starr project, Among the Oak and Ash. Still no sign of a CD or a downloadable single but I really hope it will come this year. They're doing really rocking arrangements of traditional Appalachian murder ballads and other songs: Among the Oak and Ash

well, all i know is what jonathan posted on his myspace blog:

We are currently at work on a new album after a jam-packed 2008. We'll be touring Europe in May and are very pleased to be playing this year's All Tomorrow's Parties festival.

More frequent updates can be found at our web page: www.shearwatermusic.com
